Meet Dr. Nelson Y. Howard
Dr. Nelson Y. Howard graduated from the UCLA School of Dentistry in 1986 and completed a one-year General Practice Residency at the V.A. Medical Center in West Los Angeles, CA, in 1987. He has two full service private practices focusing on Cosmetic, Functional, Implant, and Restorative Dentistry at his Center for Smile Transformations in both the cities of San Marcos and Rancho Bernardo, California.
Dr. Howard was the first dentist in all of North San Diego County and is one of 350+ dentists in the world to be an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the largest association of dentists specializing in cosmetic dentistry in the world. This award was earned by Dr. Howard for his clinical excellence, exceptional skill, and deep commitment in the Art and Science of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Dr. Howard is the President and Founder of the West Coast Society for Cosmetic Dentistry, and he was a past President of the Southwest Chapter of the AACD as well. Dr. Howard also served as a past President of the San Dieguito Dental Health Academy (SDDHA) and is the President and Founder of the North County Dentists Disability Service.
Dr. Howard is also a member of both the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and
Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation because of his commitment to excellence in both implant dentistry and oral conscious sedation. Dr. Howard also mentors other doctors who are beginning to utilize oral conscious sedation in their own practices. Dr. Howard and his highly trained team of assistants have placed and restored hundreds of dental implants for those people who are missing teeth and desire a more permanent, non-removable solution to their aesthetic and functional needs.
Dr. Howard has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education courses and is constantly updating himself and his team in advanced cosmetic materials, procedures, and techniques. In addition, Dr. Howard incorporates two different dental lasers in his
fee-for-service practices and has published numerous articles on various topics within the area of cosmetic dentistry. He has lectured nationally to other dentists and dental organizations and served as a guest speaker at several major dental meetings, focusing on advanced techniques in cosmetic and restorative dentistry and the successful marketing of a fee-for-service practice.
Dr. Howard is an avid movie buff and photographer, enjoys traveling with his children, is a collector of Disney memorabilia, and has received Black Belt Certification in the martial arts form of Shaol'in Kenpo Karate. When Dr. Howard is not busy doing one of the aforementioned, he regularly lectures to dentists and dental organizations on topics within the field of cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
In 1999, Dr. Nelson Y. Howard became the 199th dentist in the world to earn
Accreditation Status in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the largest association of dentists specializing in cosmetic dentistry in the world. This award was earned by Dr. Howard in San Antonio, Texas for his clinical excellence, exceptional skill, and deep commitment to the art and science of Cosmetic Dentistry. Accreditation serves to set standards for excellence in cosmetic dentistry. Achieving Accredited Status from the AACD requires dedication to continuing education, careful adherence to the protocols, and a resolve to produce exceptional dentistry.
Dr. Howard earned this prestigious award by presenting his dentistry to a panel of
award-winning and highly-acclaimed dentists within the organization. His skills were critiqued, evaluated, and graded on over 80 different areas of review and Dr. Howard passed the entire examination process in less than the maximum amount of time given to accreditation candidates. As part of this rigorous credentialing process, Dr. Howard also had to write and present five (5) written reports documenting every aspect of the various cases he presented for this process. His combined efforts and excellence in the art and science of cosmetic dentistry was recognized when he was presented his Accreditation award the following year in San Francisco during the AACD’s annual meeting, where Dr. Howard also presented a lecture on “Porcelain Restorations for the Year 2000 and Beyond.”
Since his Accreditation award, Dr. Howard has been actively involved in the AACD as an Editorial Review Board Member of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry and as an Accreditation Mentor to potential Accreditation candidates.
